Great post, and I just ran across your blog. I love it - I'm a student like you and I'm also very interested in social enterprise. I think it's really hard for us, living comfortable lives, to really understand the real issues. No matter how much we read about it and learn about it, it's hard to understand the best methods to solve problems unless you go in there and live on the ground, working with communities there. I haven't had an on the ground experience either yet, but I think it would significantly broaden my mindset and help me understand the realities of poverty and how to most effectively combat them. It's great that you have such an interest and knowledge of these issues at a relatively young age :) Best of luck - I'm going to be following your blog!

You're right - social business and social entrepreneurship doesn't necessarily require profit. And I agree with you, that humans' desire for profit leads to corruption and all sorts of problems. However, I believe that not everyone is like that, although the media (rightfully so, most of the time) capitalizes also on the scandal and corruption tied with profits and money in larger businesses and corporations. I see the for-profit model as one that although does dominate our country, but as a model to work with, not necessarily reject. Of course, this is only my point of view and I definitely recognize and can understand why you would want no part in it (because I also held that belief also).

On another note, I do see our project as something that can evolve and involve the online community to, as you say, raise standards for sharing essays and thoughts on the Internet, which, too, can be classified as a "social" endeavor. :)
